Risk of childhood obesity can be predicted at birth

At risk of obesity or just big boned? A new tool that calculates a baby's risk of becoming obese may settle the matter at birth. The creators of the tool hope that it will encourage parents to take early action to improve their children's health.

To develop their tool, Anita Morandi at the University of Verona in Italy and colleagues analysed data from 4032 people born in Finland in 1986.

They were particularly interested in which factors were most predictive of actual obesity. These factors included body mass index (BMI), birth weight, whether the mother smoked during pregnancy and her occupation.

They then tested the formula they derived, the "obesity risk calculator", on birth data from 1503 Italian children now aged 4 to 12 and from 1032 US children aged 7. About 75 per cent of the babies predicted to be at the highest risk of obesity actually became obese.

Harmful predictions?

The tool could be used to identify children who have almost no risk of developing child obesity, says Morandi. The remaining children will have varying degrees of risk, she says, but every one of them would be "an appropriate target for focused prevention".

There are caveats though. Morandi says the formula cannot account for certain de novo genetic mutations ? genes present in the baby but not in the parents ? that may increase a child's obesity risk.

Charlotte Wright at the University of Glasgow, UK, says that roughly 25 per cent of the tool's predictions are false positives ? inaccurately predicting future obesity. Unnecessary measures might be taken with very young children, she says. "In extreme cases an inaccurate prediction could be harmful."

And many of the environmental factors that influence the risk of obesity can change over a child's life, says health researcher Joan Costa-i-Font at the London School of Economics. These can be "hard to account for", he adds.

Stigmatisation

The model seems to be accurate, says Neil Thomas at the University of Birmingham, UK. "A few predictors often carry the majority of the risk."

However, he questions how effective the tool will be in practice. For example, will it always be acceptable to get the BMI of obese parents? Stigmatisation is a problem, he says, and it can lead to those who are most at risk being excluded.

Even if you predict the risk of obesity successfully, it is not clear what measures should be taken, says Thomas. Getting people to make lifestyle changes is really hard, he says. "A lot of societal pressures work against it."

Try out the calculator for yourself.

Universal files lawsuit against "Fifty Shades" porn "rip-off"

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hollywood's Universal Studios has filed a copyright lawsuit against a porn production company, accusing it of lifting language, characters and plot from the best-selling erotic book trilogy "Fifty Shades of Grey" for its own adult films and sex toys.

Calling one of the adult movie adaptations of the British novel "a rip-off plain and simple," Universal's lawsuit seeks to stop sales of copycat porn movies and to recoup any profits they earn.

"Fifty Shades of Grey" by E.L. James and its two sequels have sold more than 40 million copies since first being published in 2011. Universal bought the rights for a film adaptation earlier this year for a reported $5 million.

The suit was filed jointly in federal court in California on Tuesday by Universal and James's British company which owns the copyright to the novels.

The lawsuit said that Los Angeles-based based Smash Pictures had produced a movie called "Fifty Shades of Grey: a XXX Adaptation" which lifted "exact dialogue, characters, events, story, and style from the 'Fifty Shades' trilogy."

"The first XXX adaptation is not a parody, and it does not comment on, criticize, or ridicule the originals. It is a rip-off, plain and simple," the lawsuit added.

Smash Pictures could not be reached for comment.

Universal said Smash Pictures had two subsequent movies in production and that one of its subsidiaries had also launched a "Play Kit" of kinky sex toys called "Fifty Shades of Pleasure."

The lawsuit seeks an injunction, unspecified damages, and profits from sales of the movies, which it says are trademark and copyright infringements.

Mystery Micrograph #02

ShareShare ?ShareEmail ?PrintPrint

The previous Mystery Micrograph was of the surface of Blepharisma, a characteristically pink ciliate. You can see rows of the pigment granules responsible for the unusual colour. Not clearly visible throughout most of the image (only on the top side) are rows of cilia that are interspersed between the pigment granule rows (about every 5-7 rows are cilia). It?s a pretty cell to look at !

Now it?s time for another. To make this more ?fun?, I?ll leave out the scalebar for now. (Mwahaha!)

Report: U.S. birth rate lowest in more than 90 years

The U.S. birth rate fell to its lowest levels ever last year, according to a preliminary report released by the Pew Research Center on Thursday. Researchers said that the U.S.'s birth rate in 2011, which was estimated at 63.2 births per 1,000 women, "is the lowest since at least 1920, the earliest year for which there are reliable numbers."

Of particular note to researchers was the fact that the birth rate among foreign-born women and immigrant women appears to have fallen particularly sharply. Foreign-born women account for what the researchers referred to as a "disproportionate" number of U.S. births, and have done so for some time.

Here are some of the key numbers that emerged from the Pew Research Center's report on Thursday.

122.7: The recorded birth rate in 2011 is half that recorded in 1957, the peak year of the "Baby Boom."

8: The overall U.S. birth rate declined by 8 percent between 2007 and 2010, according to the center's report.

14: The birth rate among foreign-born women declined more dramatically during that same period of time than that of U.S.-born women, at 14 percent compared to 6 percent.

23: The birth rate among Mexican immigrant women revealed the sharpest decline, at 23 percent.

2.1: The average number of children that a U.S. woman would need to have in order to maintain current population levels, according to a report by the Washington Post. The current national average is 1.9 children per woman in the U.S.

9: As the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced earlier this year, the teen birth rate fell 9 percent between 2009 and 2010, dropping to the lowest rate it has been in the last 70 years. According to the Pew Research Center's report, however, U.S.-born teens still account for 11 percent of all U.S. births, while foreign-born U.S. teens account for an additional 5 percent of all U.S. births.

66: Among U.S.-born women, white women accounted for 66 percent of all births, while Hispanic women accounted for the majority of births among foreign-born U.S. women, at 56 percent.

4.0: Some 4 million babies were born to women in the U.S. in 2011, according to the Pew Research Center's numbers. 3.1 million were born to U.S.-born women, while an additional 930,000 were born to immigrant women.

(AP) ? An end of the year deadline rapidly approaching, top Obama administration officials went to Capitol Hill Thursday to press the White House case for raising tax rates on upper-bracket earners.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner's sojourn to the Capitol came after President Barack Obama and Republican House Speaker John Boehner conferred briefly Wednesday night by phone on how to avert the economy-rattling "fiscal cliff." It was their first one-on-one discussion in five days.

Obama and Boehner's 15-minute phone call came amid increasing anxiety that the White House and top Republicans are wasting time needed to negotiate a way out of a series of tax increases and spending cuts due to begin in January. Geithner and senior White House aide Rob Nabors came to Capitol Hill to visit separately Thursday with the four leaders of the House and Senate.

Geithner met first with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and ducked into a meeting with House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, and other top Republicans, including House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis.

There has been little evident progress in negotiations between the two sides. Republicans complain that the White House is slow-walking the talks and has yet to provide specifics on how Obama would curb the rapid growth of benefit programs like Medicare and Medicaid. A Reid spokesman said the White House continues to take a tough line on increasing tax rates on wealthier earners.

"We have not seen any good-faith effort on the part of this administration to talk about the real problem that we're trying to fix," said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

Obama is mounting a public campaign to build support and leverage in the negotiations, appearing at the White House with middle-class taxpayers and launching a campaign on Twitter to bolster his position.

"Right now, as we speak, Congress can pass a law that would prevent a tax hike on the first $250,000 of everybody's income," Obama said. "And that means that 98 percent of Americans and 97 percent of small businesses wouldn't see their income taxes go up by a single dime."

Obama is insisting that tax rates go up on family income exceeding $250,000; Boehner is adamant that any new tax revenues come from overhauling the tax code, clearing out tax breaks and lowering rates for all.

Republicans are also demanding significant cuts to so-called entitlement programs like Medicare, such as an increase in the eligibility age for the program from 65 to perhaps 67.

"It's time for the president and Democrats to get serious about the spending problem that our country has," Boehner said at a news conference Wednesday in the Capitol. Boehner, like Obama, expressed optimism that a deal could be reached.

At issue are steep, across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs set to strike the economy in January as well as the expiration of Bush-era tax cuts on income, investments, married couples and families with children. That combination of tax increases and spending cuts would wring more than half a trillion dollars from the economy in the first nine months of next year, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

No one anticipates a stalemate lasting that long, but many experts worry that even allowing the spending cuts and tax increases for a relatively brief period could rattle financial markets.

From their public statements, Obama and Boehner appear at an impasse over raising the two top tax rates from 33 percent and 35 percent to 36 percent and 39.6 percent. Democrats seem confident that Boehner ultimately will have to crumble, but Obama has a lot at stake as well, including a clear agenda for priorities like an overhaul of the nation's immigration laws.

Obama is also meeting privately Thursday with his defeated Republican rival Mitt Romney. The president has cast his victory over Romney as a sign that Americans back his tax proposals, which were a centerpiece of his re-election campaign.

While in Washington, Romney will also meet with his former running mate, Ryan. The Wisconsin congressman is chairman of the House Budget Committee and deeply involved in the fiscal cliff discussions.

Advancing next generation of high-speed optical communication networks

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? The Photonics Research Centre at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has recently achieved a breakthrough in researching high-speed optical communications by increasing the speed of optical communication networks by 40 times.

This breakthrough has attracted the attention of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., a leading global Information and Communications Technology (ICT) solution provider, to provide funding and equipment for further developing the leading-edge technology and filing patents.

The research was jointly undertaken by Professor Alex Wai, PolyU Vice President (Research Development), Professor Chao Lu of the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Professor Hwa-yaw Tam and Dr Alan Pak-tao Lau, Chair Professor and Assistant Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering respectively. "With this breakthrough, one can download over 177-hours-worth of YouTube video in a second," Professor Wai said. The findings have also been published in top international journals such as Optics Express, Photonics Technology Letters and Journal of Lightwave Technology.

The development of optical communications has made steadfast advancement since the invention/discovery of fibre optics by Professor Charles Kao, Nobel Laureate in Physics and former Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Over the years, fibre optics has formed the backbone of modern information technology. With the increasing dominance of smart mobile devices and bandwidth-hungry applications such as cloud computing, YouTube, Facebook and other social network activities, the overall speed demand are increasing at an unprecedented rate and major telecommunication service providers are incessantly looking for technological breakthroughs that could further push the network speed limits.

The speed of optical communications largely depends on distortions of the information signals generated from its interactions with silicon dioxide molecules that make up optical fibre. However, the higher the speed of information transmission, the more likely the signal will be distorted. When such distortions are large enough, detection errors will occur at the receiving end. If the information cannot be correctly transmitted, the whole communication system will be considered useless.

Currently, the most commonly deployed optical communication systems operate at 10Gb/s, i.e. 10 billion binary digits (bits) per second. Professor Lu and Dr Lau have cleverly combined optics, statistics and signal processing technology that greatly increase the speed of network by 40 times, i.e. 4 trillion bits per second. In particular, based on experimental observations, they found that distortions of the light signal generated from silicon dioxide molecules inside an optical fibre are not totally random. In fact, the distortions follow certain statistical characteristics.

PolyU researchers therefore proposed the use of "coherent detection," in which optical signal is first converted into electrical signal so that the data information can be preserved. This is followed by the use of more mature electronic signal processing technologies extensively used in all computers, smartphones and the like. This latest technological advance has attracted the attention of Huawei.

A Huawei spokesperson said, "A lot of universities have come up with innovative ideas that sound really out-of-the-box at first glance. However, most of them cannot overcome physical and cost constraints that the idea cannot make their way to a commercial product. From the industry standpoint, the deliverables of this PolyU research are cost-effective and can meet the practical needs of our society, bringing real benefits for mankind."

"We are pleased to see that leveraging on its strengths in scientific research, PolyU has successfully developed the fastest optical transmission systems with significant cost effectiveness. This really helps us to maintain our lead in the industry and lay down a solid foundation for our sustained growth in the future," the spokesperson added.

(AP) ? A suicide bomber on Thursday attacked a prominent Pakistani militant commander in the country's northwest who is believed to have a nonaggression pact with the army, wounding him and killing seven people, officials said.

The bomber attacked Maulvi Nazir in Wana, the main town in the South Waziristan tribal area, as he was arriving at an office he uses to meet with locals and hear their complaints, said the commander's spokesman, Maulana Ameer Nawaz. Nazir was not critically wounded, said Nawaz.

Nazir was one of over a dozen people wounded in the attack, said Pakistani intelligence officials and a local government administrator, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. They initially reported that three people died, but later raised the number to seven after some of the critically injured died of their wounds.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but suspicion is likely to fall on the Pakistani Taliban, which has been waging a bloody insurgency against the government for the past several years and has jockeyed with Nazir for power in South Waziristan.

The tribal area was the Pakistani Taliban's main sanctuary until the army launched a large ground offensive in 2009 and pushed many of them out.

Nazir is widely believed to have cut a deal with the army ahead of the offensive that allowed him to stay in South Waziristan as long as he remained on the sidelines. The militant commander has in the past focused his fight against U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan, not against the Pakistani state.

Nazir had been running a secret campaign in recent weeks to push the Pakistani Taliban and foreign militants allied with them out of Wana and the surrounding areas, said intelligence officials.

Nawaz, the militant commander's spokesman, said the suicide bomber who attacked Nazir appeared to be a 15- or 16-year-old boy.

"The moment the chief got out of his vehicle, the boy ran toward him and detonated his explosives," Nawaz told The Associated Press by telephone.

Yar Mohammad, a resident of Wana who witnessed the attack, said the blast was huge.

"I'm seeing smoke everywhere," he said.

Nazir's fighters retaliated after the attack by killing two Pakistani Taliban militants in the main market in Wana, said intelligence officials. There were also reports of Nazir's fighters attacking Pakistani Taliban militants in the nearby village of Kari Kot, they said.
