LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Subaru of Indiana Automotive was the first car manufacturing company to receive certification for overall management and environmental management. Now, the company has one more accomplishment to add to the list.
SIA was again the first car manufacturing company to receive their ISO 50001 certification on Monday. The certification is awarded to companies that are committed to improving energy conservation.
SIA Executive Vice President Tom Easterday said this is a huge achievement for the company.
"To be the first one to have the energy management standard is very significant," said Easterday. "We've been fortunate enough to be a leader in environmental stewardship, fortunate enough to be a leader in safety in the industry, and now we can show that we're also certified to be a leader in energy management too."
Easterday said in order to receive the certification, a company has to have a system in place that measures not only energy efficiency, but has specific targets on how to do so. The company has to also have met those target needs and have maintained them for more than a year.
Easterday said SIA was able to accomplish those tasks in several ways.

"We achieved that through several different projects," said Easterday. "Everything from changing out lighting, to reducing the amount of energy usage in lighting, to some projects in our paint shops regarding the robotics there."
Easterday said SIA was able to show a total energy reduction of two percent in their electrical usage. The ISO 50001 certification is a new certification that became available in 2011.
